The Queen of Versailles is a fascinating riches-to-rags documentary that follows the lives of David and Jackie Siegel, a nouveau riche Orlando, Florida couple who were famously interrupted while building the largest home in America by the 2008 economic downfall. The house is designed to be a 90,000 square-foot replica of the Palace of Versailles outside of Paris. David Siegel, owner of timeshare sales company Westgate Resorts, was a free-spending billionaire when construction on the home began in 2005. But while documentary cameras were rolling back in 2008, the bottom fell out of the stock market, lenders and banks went belly up, and Westgate Resorts cash flow dried up.

Construction on the house was halted, and the film became about watching the Siegel family try to survive as their empire began to collapse around them.

Cohen sat down with Jackie Siegel after The Queen of Versailles made its television premier on Bravo, to catch audiences up on the familys happenings since the documentary cameras stopped rolling in 2010. During the interview, Siegel assured Cohen that Westgate Resorts was back on its money-making track.

Jackie Siegel said that Westgate just had its best year in 33 years of business, and that they have even resumed construction on Versailles, Ernst says. The house wont be completed for three years, but Jackie intends to throw a party there in 2015, to celebrate Davids 80th birthday.

The original plans for the home, which includes nine kitchens, 30 bedrooms, 33 bathrooms, three pools, two bowling alleys, a disco, roller rink, two tennis courts, three hot tubs, a 30-car underground carport, an expansive wine cellar, a bomb shelter, two game rooms and two movie theaters, remain intact.

Shooting on the award-winning documentary began as the Siegels started work building their mega-mansion. Halfway through construction, when Westgate Resorts tanked, the Siegels were forced to place the unfinished property on the market for $ 75 million as they faced the possibility of bankruptcy. With no buyers in sight by the time Siegel managed to turn things around at Westgate Resorts, Versailles construction resumed with a target date of 2016 for completion.

Canadian tech start-ups are increasingly seeing their success develop through merger and acquisition (M&A) deals with larger US-based companies, according to new research carried out by MaRS, the Canadian business development engine.

The company has compiled its research into a series of articles and reports entitled Borderless Investments. The findings of the research have shown the general trend that the success of Canadian tech start-ups is closely linked to their ability to break outside of the regional boundaries, generally through being bought out or through an IPO. A MaRS spokesman said that the key for new Canadian businesses is getting themselves into a position where they are as close as possible to their end users most often found in the tech-hungry population of their southern neighbor.

Speaking to the authors of the report, one Toronto-based venture capitalist explained, As Canadians, we feel we are close enough to the US that we can still operate out of Toronto and cater to the American market. I dont believe this to hold true. A companys odds of success are better the closer they can get to their market.

MaRS was able to amass a raft of solid information about the state of M&A activity between Canada and US tech companies, thanks to months spent researching and analyzing thousands of data points, speaking with venture capital experts in both the US and Canada and gaining industry insights from business leaders.

The research found that 183 Canadian tech companies have been the subject of M&A deals during the last five years. This seems very small in comparison to the 2,300 US companies that have been acquired during the same period, but it was found to align with the general 10:1 ratio that is commonly used to assess trends between the USA and Canada.

Of the Canadian companies that had been bought, the average number of years from start-up to acquisition was eight, and around 70 per cent were snapped up by US-based corporates.

An area that has caused contention among the experts surveyed was the selling price of Canadian businesses. The average price paid for a Canadian business was found to be around US$ 100 million, with a median value of US$ 32 million compared to the US price of US$ 384 million and a median value of $ 82 million. Analysis of the M&A trends has pointed to a potential lack of late-stage development funding in Canada, leading its home-grown businesses to sell up at an early stage in order to be able to access the vital funding needed to promote growth.

The geography of the continent and the relative locations of the two countries industry hubs was also shown to affect the nature, number and value of the deals that took place. More than three-quarters (76 per cent) of the British Columbia-based businesses involved in deals were bought by US-based corporates, compared to 65 per cent of the Ontario-based businesses and 56 per cent of those headquartered in Quebec. BCs proximity to the global tech haven on Silicon Valley in California, as well as the innovation hub of Seattle, seems to back up the notion that the closer a company is to its end market, the greater its chances of success.

The research also showed that US corporates still cast their nets fairly closely to the bases of their Canadian operations when looking for potential acquisitions. All six of the Canadian acquisitions made by Google were in Ontario where two out of three of its Canadian offices are based.

Claremont Graduate University (CGU) today announced the appointment of Melody Kanschat, a 22-year veteran of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) and a renowned expert in developing capacity in arts organizations, as the executive director of the Getty Leadership Institute (GLI) at CGU. Kanschat was president and chief operating officer of LACMA since 2005, responsible for its daily operations and a budget of $ 60 million annually. Kanschat will lead the GLI at CGU into a new era of collaboration; redefining and strengthening its historic contributions to the arts, said CGU President Deborah Freund. Kanschats management experience, her connections in the museum field, and her stellar reputation as a leader of complex teams will prove invaluable to the GLI as it re-envisions its future at CGU.

Partnering with the faculty of CGUs Peter F. Drucker and Masatoshi Ito Graduate School of Management to create an executive management program tailored to explore the challenges facing today’s museum leaders, Kanschat described her focus as re-energizing and implementing a new strategic vision, strengthening current relationships, and establishing new partnerships and alliances to ensure GLIs programs prepare art museum professionals for the future.

I am excited to work closely with the CGU faculty, especially with the Drucker Schools curricular focus on creative industries, stated Kanschat. In renewing the GLIs curriculum, we also will partner with the Schools of Arts and Humanities, Behavioral and Organizational Sciences, and the Center for Information and Systems Technologies at CGU.

In 2012, the GLI at CGU received a $ 1.95 million grant, the second grant from the Getty Foundation. It will fund programming through 2015.

Added Getty Foundation Director Deborah Marrow, Melody Kanschat has the expertise and collaborative spirit to lead the GLI into a new era. I look forward to the programs she will develop together with colleagues around the world.

Over the decades, the GLIs program has evolved to respond to the growing complexities confronting leaders of museums and other nonprofit institutions. Its signature leadership development program will continue to evolve, utilize a mixture of intensive residential courses, webinars, and online coursework. GLI participants have included high ranking professionals from a variety of museums, non-profit board members, academics, philanthropists, and public officials. More than 1,500 alumni from the United States and 30-plus countries are now engaged with a diverse range of cultural organizations around the globe.

The GLI’s reputation for academic rigor and innovation, CGUs focus on research and management training in the creative industries, and the incredible foundation built by retired Executive Director Phil Nowlen, made this opportunity particularly enticing for me, Kanschat said. I am eager to connect with old friends and new to deepen and broaden the GLI’s impact in the museum field.

A career-long participant and presenter at national, regional, and international museum conferences, Kanschat currently serves on the Santa Monica Redevelopment Successor Agency Oversight Board and the boards of the LA Associates of Save the Children, Arts for LA and Move LA. She received the 2010 Civic Leader Award at the We Love LA event recognizing her commitment to building transportation and cultural infrastructure in Los Angeles.
